Kushiro-shitsugen is Japan’s largest wetlands “swampy marshland” and is designated as Kushiro-shitsugen National Park. The size of Kushiro-shitsugen National Park is 26,861 ha. The wetlands, which is registered under the Ramsar Convention is 7,863 ha.
It consists of reed and sedge marshland, rivers, and lakes and is considered to be the treasured natural plain in which wildlife creatures such as white cranes with red crests “Grus Japonensis” and giant salamander “Andrias Japonicus” still live. Therefore, entry or development is highly restricted.
