Akiu Great Falls (Akiu Otaki)

Akiu Great Falls is one of the best three great falls of Japan along with Nachi Falls and Kegon Falls. Non stop sound of water falling and a gaze in to the depth of the falls will bring you a great thrill. The great falls of 55m in height and 6m in width, Akiu Great Falls was chosen as one of Japan’s top 10 waterfalls and also was designated as National Site of Scenic Beauty. You can walk down the slope by the Fudotaki bridge to the waterfall basin.

Miyagi Zao Ski resort, Sumikawa Snow Park

At the altitude higher than 1,100m, there appears a vast panoramic view ski resort and beautiful nature of Zao. The ski resort provides various slopes for skiers of different levels. Beginner’s slope allows you to relax and ski through frost covered trees, and deep powder snow slopes are for advanced skiers. The ski resort also provides sightseeing tours of rime on trees on snowmobile every day. Further provides trekking tours in the snow mountains and ski journeys in the vast nature. No doubt satisfying every guest’s playful spirit. One-day lift ticket is 3,300 yen per person (adult).

Experience the traditional wooden handcraft

Miyagi Zao Kokeshi (tranditional wooden doll)-kan Museum

Very famous Kokeshi doll handcraft was originated during the Edo Period in Tohoku region. Kokeshi dolls have simple but adorable appearance. The Kokeshi-kan museum was built to hand down the art of traditional handcraft. The museum offers Kokeshi doll drawing and coloring class (about 40 minute course) where you can make your own original Kokeshi doll. Fee for the class is 750 yen per person. Admission fee to the museum is 300 yen per person.

Matsushima Tourism Association, Oyster House

Opened only during the oyster season, October through March, you can enjoy fresh oyster BBQ sizzling on a grill at the Oyster House. Combo A includes all you can eat fresh oyster with shells (50 min.) and oyster rice (reservation needed by the day before): 3,000 yen per person. Combo B includes all you can eat fresh oyster with shells (40 min, reservation for the same day can be made at the Oyster House): 2,000 yen per person.

Zuigan-ji-Temple

Zen temple of Masamune DATE

Zuigan-ji Temple

This zen temple was originally founded in 828 AD (5th year of Tencho) by Jikaku Daishi. What we see now is the temple buildings rebuilt by Masamune Date from 1609 AD (14th year of Keicho) onward with reference to Momoyama architecture style. It took 5 years to rebuild. The main hall of the temple is currently under restoration until March, 2016 and is closed. However, the national treasure museum is opened to public for special exhibition. The tall cedar trees along the path leading to the temple buildings bring fresh and clean atmosphere. Admission fee is 700 yen per person (adult). Here, you can also experience hand-copying of Buddhist scriptures (Shyakyo).

Oshima

The island where the name “Matsushima” was originated

Oshima

This island used to be a place where Buddhist monks carry out their disciplinary training. It is said there were 108 caves, and about 50 caves remain today. Red lacquered bridge, Togetsu-kyo, brings you to Oshima. The board monument of heavenly world on the island is to pray for the dead. This is a place full of spirit.

Godaido-Temple

Symbol of Matsushima, this temple houses statues of Godai Myoo (five great statues of Myoo)

Godaido Temple

This temple is Bishamon-do temple founded in 807 AD (2nd year of Daido) by Sakanoue Tamuramaro. What we see now is the temple buildings rebuilt by Masamune Date from 1604 AD (9th year of Keicho) onward. As of today, this is the oldest Momoyama style architecture in Tohoku region and is designated as National important cultural property.
Admission is free. Godaido Temple has been a symbol of Matsushima, and the view of Godaido Temple sitting in snow has its peculiar beauty.

Sendai Castle Site

Sendai Castle was founded in 1610 AD (15th year of Keicho) by Masamune DATE, the first lord of Sendai Domain. You can feel the history by just looking at the stone walls and the turret (which was restored) by the Otemon Gate, the turret being a defensive building that stands by the gate). From Aoba Park, you can see the panoramic view of Sendai City and the Pacific Ocean. The statue of Masamune DATE which stands at the castle tower is truly one of the sightseeing spots representing Sendai.

Zuihoden

Zuihoden is the house (Otamaya) where the spirit of Masamune DATE, the lord of Sendai Domain, rests. Its architectural style being greatly influenced by the culture of Momoyana Period, it’s rich and luxurious appearance still remains after restoration. In the area surrounded by Japanese cedar trees, there also sit Kansenden and Zennoden. Their gorgeous rich ornaments will take your breath away. Admission fee is 550 yen per person (adult)
