The king of flowers – come see various kinds of colorful tree peonies

Akiba Sohonden Kasuisai

The notorious temple of Soto sect has a history of 600 years and is the first temple that was made famous as the “temple of tree peonies”. From April through beginning of May, its “tree peony garden” will have 2,000 trees of about 600 kinds of tree peonies at their bloom. One day seems like not enough time to see all the beautiful peonies. The temple also offers hand copying of Buddhist scripture experience and “Shojin ryori (vegetable dishes)” which are delicately prepared by using local vegetables. Shojin ryori is very healthy not using any meat and fish. Shojin ryori is provided fro 2,000 yen (reservation needed one week before).

Nihondaira

Nihondaira was selected as one of new top 100 tourist spots in Japan. Nihondaira also was designated as a national scenic spot and a prefectural natural park. Being located on a hill 307m above sea level, Nihondaira gives you the vast view of the sea of tea trees, Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms forming a beautiful contrast that takes your breath away. In addition, if you go on the Nihondaira Ropeway that connects Nihondaira and Kunouzan-toshogu, you can see the beautiful scenes of Byoubu-tani (canyon like a folding screen), Izu island of Suruga Bay and Omaezaki cape. The ropeway ride is 1,100 yen for adults.

Miho no Matsubara (Miho pine groove)

Miho no Matsubara is recognized as one of the three most scenic spots in Japan and one of the three most scenic pine grooves in Japan at the same time. Along the coast line of about 7km long, there grow about 5 million trees of black pine. This is a place where Mt. Fuji can be viewed from ocean side. According to the legend as we still talk about it today, this is the beach where a heavenly maiden came down. The legend goes and says that when the heavenly maiden came down, her plumage got caught in a pine tree and later, this pine tree was made the sacred tree of Miho shrine.

Sumatakyo Nature Trail

From the Yume no Tsuribashi (Dream suspension bridge), you can look down to the beautiful green water of the lake. You can also walk across the Hiryukyo bridge which is built over a deep canyon. If you hike up the Kuro-zaka hill and Etchira hill, you will arrive at Osakizaka viewing deck from where you can see beautiful views of different scenes. If you are a female, you would want to try making a wish at the middle point of the Yume no Tsuribashi so that a romantic love will come to you.

Popular among female visitors – hot spring that gives to soft and silky skin

Municipal open air hot spring “Bijozukuri no yu”

You can hear the water streaming down Kajikazawa stream from Bijozukuri no yu (hot spring that creats beautiful women) which is the municipal hot spring bath of Sumatakyo-onsen. You can feel the nature of sumatakyo very close to you. This hot spring is a simple sulfer spring. After bathing, your skin will become silky and smooth. Bathing fee is 400 yen for adults.
